The Weekend Film Review: EXPIRED

Starring Samantha Morton, Jason Patric, Teri Garr and Illeana Douglas
All I can say is WOW!!! EXPIRED has more dysfunctional characters than the Jackson 5 family! Well, here goes my sexy
review...
The film starts with Claire (Samantha Morton), as a naive and "virgin-like" meter maid who lives in a "Bambi-like" world in the
city of Santa Monica, California. She attempts to please everyone she comes in contact with (even the people that she tickets
for illegal parking). Even when she gets "cursed-out" by those she "writes up" she remains as control officer drenched in
hostility, gets the "hots" for Claire in the most awkward fashion. Jay is obviously living in his own world, filled with bitterness
and several burnt-out brain cells (see the movie and you'll know what I am talking about). Even so, Claire is oddly intrigued by
this rude and primate of a man which leads you to believe the last time she had a love interest was when the doctor slapped
her butt cheeks at birth!

Things get even more weird when Jay (Jason Patric), shows up in the film. Teri Garr plays Claire's sickly stroke-victim mother
who is unable to talk or move with any agility. She is very dependent on her daughter and this explains Claire's sheltered life
and lack of romantic opportunities.
Throughout the film we witness Claire and Jay as they have one weird interaction after another. The more cruel he is the more
she tries to please him. Several times I wanted to dive through the screen and give Jay the ultimate beat down but that would
have made me look foolish. Plus, they would have throw me out of the theater! Jay has quite a love affair with his hand (if you
know what I mean) and until meeting Claire that seemed to be his main source of stress relief.
Every character in the film had deep issues so maybe it was the salty Santa Monica air! The fact that these characters
disturbed me beyond believe and that I became lost in the performances proved how much each actor nailed their role.
Everyone in the film did an excellent job of making you observe the characters, not observe actors "playing" characters. This is
the highest compliment an actor can receive!
The characters in this movie were dark and depressing but I enjoyed it nonetheless. So, on a scale "4 stars" with "4" being best
I give this movie a "3.9" (the ".1" gives me some wiggle room). :)
